American Veterans, or AMVETS, began in 1948 when trained national service officers began helping veterans of World War II obtain benefits promised to them by the federal government. Since then, the volunteer-led organization has remained at the forefront of public policies pertaining to the national defense as well as funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Each year, AMVETS hosts a national convention for leaders and members of the organization to share ideas. The 2015 event, scheduled for August 17 through 22 in Birmingham, Alabama, allows attendees to elect new leaders and vote on resolutions for the upcoming year. During the six-day event, attendees can also participate in a black-tie banquet as well as Alabama Night, in which the Trippin’ Dixie variety band performs.
