Balloon Sinus Dilation for Treating Chronic Sinusitis

Having previously practiced in the greater Chicago area, Dr. Angelo Consiglio is currently a respected Key West, Florida, allergist and otolaryngologist. Dedicated to treating patients with the latest medical techniques and technologies, Angelo Consiglio, MD, has received trained in balloon sinus dilation (BSD) as a way of relieving sinus problems.

Affecting more than 30 million people in the United States, chronic sinusitis involves persistent nasal airway inflammation. Traditionally, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) was utilized to treat this condition. Common after-effects of this noncurative surgery included persistence of infection and inflammation, as well as formation of scar tissue. Modern surgical techniques focus on tissue restoration and preservation, and BSD has become a preferred method of treatment for its minimal impact on the native sinus anatomy. BSD involves dilation of the obstructed sinus ostia, which is an opening that connects the nasal cavity and the sinus. Like FESS, the ultimate aim of balloon sinus dilation is to provide long-term ventilation of sinuses in order to minimize obstructions and improve patients’ breathing.
